Greetings From.....: Paris, Illustrator Process

Today I made my first postcard in Illustrator using one of the images I sourced from the Internet.

I felt that the image didn't work as a landscape image as the Eiffel Tower is a tall building therefore the portrait format would compliment it better.

After changing the orientation I gave some thought to my tutorial with Fred last Thursday about how my work is becoming more shape driven and how I should try to remove as much detail as possible. So I went about covering the existing image of the Eiffel Tower with a greyish shape.

After this I hid the shape and I inserted line work using the Illustrator pen tool. I did this over several layers so that I wouldn't have any trouble mixing up/adding/removing anchor points or other tricky technical issues that can arise with using only one layer. Once the line work was drawn in I made the shape layer visible again.

After this I altered the stroke of the lines, feeling that the previous line stroke was boring and very technical looking. The replacement stroke (with a stronger line weight) also looks more analogue with the stroke looking like that from a brush of some sort.

I then inserted the city name into the image, for some reason I felt that the image alone wouldn't convey where it is. I later removed the Paris title before saving (this was also because the brief states that the postcard must not use type).

I then played around with the composition of the image feeling that having it dead centre was visually boring. Having the image pushed to the right, somewhat off the page makes it visually more interesting but may not necessarily be the best place. I will continue to play around with the layout as I continue with the brief.

(Note: It is only as I write this that I have given thought to the format size. This is something I must keep in mind going forward!)
