A Matter of Opinion: Briefing

After completing our third Studio Brief we were given our forth and final Brief for the Visual Skills Module entitled; A Matter of Opinion. For this we must produce three final pieces showing our development, experimentation and understanding along the way.

1.   Fail. Fail again. Fail better. - Samuel Beckett
2.   We don’t see things as they areWe see them as we are. - Anais Nin
3.   Style = Fart - Stefan Sagmeister
4.   The best designers can make music on any instrument - Anne Traver
5.   We are what we repeatedly do. - Aristotle
6.   When I die, there is nobody to take my place - Keith Harring
7.   A drawing is simply a line going for a walk - Paul Klee
8.   Life is the art of drawing without an eraser - Unknown
9.   Creativity takes courage - Henry Matisse
10 . People ignore design that ignores people - Frank Chimero
11.  Culture used to be the opposite of commerce - Tibor Kalman
12.  Comics are a gateway drug to literacy - Art Spiegelman
13   Complex ideas can produce simple things. - Daniel Eatock
14   Ideas are one thing and what happens is another. - John Cage

From this list we were asked to choose a quote. I picked 'Comics are a gateway to literacy - Art Spiegelman' purely for two reasons. Firstly, I love comics so it stood out to me and secondly, I have recently finished reading Maus by Art Spiegelman and feel quite drawn to his work at the moment. Furthermore more we should also adhere the work to one of these three categories.
  • Image as Communication
  • Type and Image
  • Type as Image
None of these really stand out to me at the moment, I'll begin by creating some concepts before deciding which category my work will consider.
